Looking for a new fitness challenge?

One Arizona training facility decided to change things up a bit and prepare its clients and a few trainers for a 5K course that has them doing some ridiculous but very fun obstacles.

This isn’t your typical workout at Scott’s Training Systems (STS) in Chandler, Ariz.

“It’s a pretty intense workout,” said Scott Keppel, owner of STS. “We’ve had some people not be able to make it due to various reasons.”

Keppel is helping some of his trainers and clients get ready for the Ridiculous Obstacle Challenge 5K race in Phoenix this past weekend.

“Each time we set up an obstacle course, [we] change it up a little bit with what we have access to,” Keppel said.

Some of the crazy obstacles Keppel’s team will be doing along the race course include hopping on the world’s largest inflatable slide and the Tarzan swing.

“We know it’s going to be like the show ‘Wipe Out,’ where it’s obstacle course based, like they call it the world’s biggest inflatable race,” said Nolan Hyland, STS trainer. So we’re going to be bouncing around and falling into pits.”

Hyland and the rest of the gang want to be prepared and believe Keppel’s ninja warrior-style workout is definitely going to give them the edge to succeed.

“We definitely feel different every time because Scott finds a way to add something to make sure we feel different,” said Donald Alexander, STS trainer.

“I’m just trying to keep my breakfast down,” Hyland said.

Hard work that shows Hyland and STS trainer Watus Cooper’s clients that they too get a little nervous when they try out a new exercise routine.

“It’s definitely something I can relate to when they say, ‘I get nervous coming into the workout not knowing what to expect,’ and that’s exactly how I feel,’” Cooper said.

As for Keppel, while this workout isn’t for everyone, changing up an exercise routine to get you ready for a fitness event like the Ridiculous Obstacle Course Challenge can be a good thing.

“This is just opening up the eyes for some people that are like, I don’t want to do a body-building competition or figure competition or the thought of running, you know, a half marathon, marathon, doesn’t sound appealing,” Keppel said. “Something like this is another fitness goal that might be something good for someone.”

While Keppel’s workout was pretty intense to get his team ready for the race, anyone 13 and up can participate, no matter what their athletic ability is.
