The Health2Fit Bridal Challenge contestants are working hard to get in shape for the big day.

While our four brides-to-be are learning how to eat right and exercise, their trainers in our nine-week challenge decided to switch things up and throw in something different, all in the name of charity.

“This race, Busting Butts to Save Breasts, was created three years ago after my wife had got diagnosed with breast cancer,” said Scott Keppel, owner of Scott’s Training Systems in Chandler. “Thankfully, everything is good now and we donate 100 percent of the proceeds to Face in the Mirror.”

Keppel thought why not challenge all of the brides-to-be to come out and see how they do in this 5K event.

“I think it’s a good challenge for them because it’s not only a challenge for them, but it’s also a good charity, too,” Keppel said.

Keppel and Watus Cooper are training two of the contestants, Barb Usher and Jessica Azpeitia.

“It does give them as far as their cardiovascular [is concerned] to let them know where they’re at and where they’re going to go,” Keppel said.

Dave Dreas and Ben Novak from Arizona Training Lab in Phoenix have the other two contestants, Tabitha Rodriguez and Bethany Carriger.

“One of the challenges that we have to do at the end of the contest is a mile run,” Dreas said. “Obviously, being that it’s a 5K, they’re going to do a little more than that. It’s actually going to help them and push them a little bit.”

“I think the biggest thing for them is learning to be consistent,” Novak said. “Everybody shoots out the gate really well, and then after that all of a sudden reality hits, ‘Oh crap, I’m doing this for weeks and weeks and weeks and now it’s getting harder and harder.’

“So I think the hard part’s coming right now and we’ll see how they do,” Novak continued.

The ladies brought along a cheering section from their fiancés to several family members.

“I think it’s really good for them to challenge themselves and also get out here and get that team community and the competitive spirit going,” Cooper said.

For some of the brides-to-be this was the first 5K race they’ve ever done.

So how did they do?

“I felt pretty good towards the end, so I wasn’t dying with my breathing,” Azpeitia said.

“My trainer, he was definitely my big inspiration,” Rodriguez said. “He’s like, ‘Come on, just pull through it.’”

“It was a great accomplishment and it was nice to know that I can do it and keep going to do another one,” Usher said.

Challenges that the bridal contestants don’t mind doing to get them looking good for their wedding day.

At the end of the nine weeks, they will compete against each other to see who can be the fittest bride.
