The Health2Fit (H2F) Challenge contestants have been working hard the last three weeks as they try to turn their unhealthy lives into healthier ones. The four Arizona contestants have eight weeks to see what kind of changes they can make.

They have been getting the tools to succeed in food and exercise from our team of experts made up of personal trainers, a nutritionist and registered dietitian.

While the journey is just beginning, the contestants realize getting back on a healthy track doesn’t happen overnight.

“When I got out of college, I became such a workaholic that a lot of stuff actually kind of became less and less,” said Lisa Alering, H2F challenger.

Alering’s active lifestyle of playing sports and exercising has become less and less over the years.

“I’ve just got really thrown off and kind of out of control,” Alering said.

She also had trouble in the food department.

“Basically for the last two years, I’ve had a job [with] a really weird schedule and so everything I’ve done in terms of eating has been quick,” Alering said. “It’s been a wake-up call, [to] get on the scale and you go, ‘Wait, this is the heaviest I’ve ever been.’”

So when Alering heard about the H2F Challenge, the 46-year-old sent us an email on why she was ready to make a change.

“I think the line that everybody kind of teases me about now is when I said, ‘I want to wake the diva within,’ and not saying diva in a bad way, I just wanted to kind of say, ‘Hey, wake up I’m here,’” Alering said.

Alering was not only looking for advice when it came to food and exercise, she wanted someone to hold her accountable.

Since being picked as one of the contestants, Alering has been breaking a sweat since the moment she walked into Scott’s Training Systems in Chandler.

“The No. 1 thing was Lisa wanted to kind of cultivate the diva within and I really love that statement because I think so many females don’t realize their full potential,” said Kelli Gubrud, personal trainer at Scott’s Training Systems. “Lisa totally recognized that and said, right from the start, ‘I don’t think I’m all I can be,’ and that’s what I’m looking for.”

Gubrud will be coaching Alering twice a week during the challenge.

“We’re really trying to work on getting her stronger through the midsection, so she’s not so much of a midsection gainer,” Gubrud said.

Brad Myers at L.I.F.E. with Brad and Patti Milligan with Tignum Sustainable High Performance Institute are joining forces to help the contestants choose a healthier food path.

“I’m there to really support them psychologically as they begin to implement this plan,” Milligan said. “They all have had some success in the past losing weight, but unfortunately, it’s gone back on.”

“So this time around they’re extremely motivated, but they really recognize the pit stops,” Milligan continued.

Pit stops that include not eating enough during the day, especially for Alering.

“We adjusted her meal plan a little bit, not much,” Myers said. “She’s really adhering to it with 100 percent compliance and it’s definitely showing in the results.”

Results that Alering hopes will last a lifetime.

“Challenge or not, whatever I accomplish is going to be amazing,” Alering said. “It just changed my life in a week, so I could only imagine what’s it’s going to be like at eight weeks.”
