“This was one of the ways I felt I could in a sense thank them for all they have done for us,” said Scott Keppel, founder of Scott’s Training Systems in Chandler.
Operation Ward 57, a nonprofit supporting wounded soldiers and their families, is asking gyms across the country to participate in a 22 WOD (Workout of the Day) to end Veteran suicide on Sunday, February 22 at 10:20 a.m. (12:20 p.m. ET)
On average, 22 veterans in the U.S. are reported to take their lives every day.
“Basically they wanted everyone starting at the same exact time doing the same concept of a workout,” Keppel said. “Twenty-two exercises with each one being 22 reps for a [donation] of $22.”
There will even be a two minute moment of silence during the workout at the 22 minute mark to remember those who have died in battle.
While not every gym’s workout will be the same, Keppel gave us a idea of what people can expect to see when they come to his training facility.
“We want to do some movements that we know the military are required to do for testing,” Keppel said. “The exercises will include pull-ups, push-ups, kettle bell swings sit-ups and more.”
Keppel said the workout will be for all fitness level and kids can even join in on the fun.
“Kids can come and we’re doing $11 for up to two kids and then each additional kid would be $5,” Keppel said.
A good cause to not only bring awareness to veteran suicide, but to help be part of a solution to prevent this from happening to another solider.
“Without them, we wouldn’t have the freedoms to do the things that we get to do everyday,” Keppel said.
All the proceeds raised from this nationwide event will go to Operation Ward 57’s Service Dog Assistance program.
Keppel encourages anyone joining him and his team on Sunday to show up to his facility by 10 a.m.
