Holiday Run Challenge

“The first thing to go is health during the holidays,” Dennis Mackle said. “So this is my way of helping more people focus on themselves.”

Mackle is challenging family, friends and even people he doesn’t know to run or walk at least 1 mile a day between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.

The idea came from an article he saw in Runner’s World magazine a few years ago about how one man made a pact with himself to run 1 mile a day during the holidays.

“I thought that sounded like a great challenge and I told my wife that I was going to try this and wanted her to join,” Mackle said.

They both took the challenge and Mackle filmed his daily runs to hold himself accountable. Check out one of his videos –

“The hardest part about running or working out is getting yourself out the door,” Mackle said. “Once you take those first steps, you’re not only glad, but it feels good too.”

Mackle, who has participated in several half marathons and trail races, said signing up for an event like a 5K is one way to stick to your fitness goals.

“If you have something on the calendar, you’re more apt to stick with it,” Mackle said.

Some other ideas Mackle suggested to get people motivated is to join a running group or participate in Runner’s World Run Streak (#RWRUNSTREAK) where you run at least 1 mile per day until New Year’s Day, just like he’s encouraging people with his Holiday Run Challenge Facebook page.

“For me, I just want to encourage my friends and family to take a little time for themselves during the holiday season to run or walk,” Mackle said. “If you’re doing a mile a day, you’re essentially doing 7 miles a week and that’s not too shabby.”

It’s not too late to join Mackle’s Holiday Run Challenge, sign up on his Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/649655081842854/?fref=nf and then post photos of your progress to get healthy.
